'Mostly Ended Up Being Chinese Drones': Senate Intel's Top Democrat on the 17-Night Langley Mystery
Asked in August whether he ever got answers about the 2023 incursions over Langley Air Force Base, Sen. Mark Warner told a UFO-focused reporter they 'mostly ended up being Chinese drones.' Asked whether he'd seen pictures, he said no. The exchange was published Oct. 10.

WASHINGTON (Aug. 7, 2026; published Oct. 10): For 17 nights in December 2023, something kept showing up in the sky over Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, home to some of the most advanced fighter jets in the American arsenal. Nobody has publicly said who, or what, it was.

A senior United States senator with access to classified intelligence has publicly attributed most of the extraordinary incursions to China, nearly three years after the objects appeared over Langley Air Force Base in Virginia...

Perfect. So Chinese drones we can't get rid of and there is a ton of Chinese owned farmland right next to a lot of our military installations.

Hard disagree; fancy high-tech drones in US airspace would've been at very high risk of falling into enemy hands, either by being shot down or inevitable malfunction.

I have a really hard time believing this. That's just an awful lot of logistics to do....what? Get photographs? When they have their own satellites?

Then, in a hallway exchange on Capitol Hill, one of the few people in Congress with access to the nation’s most sensitive intelligence offered an answer in six words.
“Mostly ended up being Chinese drones,” Sen. Mark Warner said.
What we know
On the record: documents, statements, dates and places. Sources below.
- Who said it. Warner, a Virginia Democrat, is the ranking member, the top Democrat, on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
- When. Reporter Matt Laslo of the newsletter Ask a Pol UAP put the question to him on Aug. 7, 2026. Laslo didn’t publish it until Oct. 10, and opened his post with an apology for the two-month delay, which he blamed on ongoing legal and credentialing problems.
- The question. Laslo asked whether Warner ever got answers on the Langley incursions in 2023.
- The answer. Warner said the incursions “mostly ended up being Chinese drones.” Laslo asked, “Oh, really?” and Warner replied, “Yeah.”
- The follow-up. Laslo asked if it was confirmed, and whether Warner had seen pictures. “No,” Warner said. Then: “I’ll ask around.”
- The pickup. Above The Norm News wrote it up on Oct. 12, and a link posted to r/HighStrangeness on Oct. 13 drew 369 points and more than 100 comments.
That’s the whole exchange. Warner didn’t say where his information came from, which agency reached the conclusion, how it was reached, or what “mostly” leaves out.
What’s claimed
Accounts, testimony and theories, as told by the people who tell them.
- That China did it. That’s Warner’s characterization, offered offhand and, by his own answer, without having seen the imagery himself.
- How big it was. Above The Norm News, quoted in the Reddit post, called it “a mysterious wave of unidentified drones that repeatedly penetrated restricted airspace above one of America’s most sensitive military installations,” and said the objects “forced military commanders to relocate advanced F-22 Raptor fighter jets.” We haven’t independently confirmed those details for this story.
- What it wasn’t. Laslo’s headline frames Warner’s answer as “Chinese drones,” not UAP. Warner himself didn’t use either word beyond “drones.”
What readers said
Readers didn’t buy it, from either direction.
Some thought the explanation was worse than a mystery. “Perfect. So Chinese drones we can’t get rid of and there is a ton of Chinese owned farmland right next to a lot of our military installations,” wrote u/Acceptable-One-6597.
Others thought it didn’t add up. “Hard disagree; fancy high-tech drones in US airspace would’ve been at very high risk of falling into enemy hands, either by being shot down or inevitable malfunction,” wrote u/Middle-Cod-7016.
And three days later, u/Valar_Kinetics questioned the motive: “That’s just an awful lot of logistics to do…what? Get photographs? When they have their own satellites?”
Why it matters
A senator’s offhand remark isn’t an intelligence assessment. But Warner isn’t just any senator: as the Intelligence Committee’s top Democrat, he’s one of a handful of lawmakers who would expect to be briefed on exactly this kind of incident. If he’s right, foreign drones loitered over a front-line U.S. fighter base for more than two weeks and were never stopped. If he’s wrong, or repeating something he heard secondhand, the Langley nights are still unexplained.
Either way, the answer came with an asterisk he added himself: he hasn’t seen the pictures. He said he’d ask around.
