'A Bag? A Balloon? A Paraglider? A UFO?' The Object That Set Off Sirens on Israel's Lebanon Border
On the night of Oct. 10, an unidentified object drifting in from Lebanon set off hostile-aircraft sirens in Arab al-Aramshe and sent troops searching through the night. Three days later the IDF said it was most likely a balloon or a hot-air device. It has never been found.

ARAB AL-ARAMSHE, Israel (Oct. 10, 2026): At about 8 o’clock on a Saturday night, the sirens went off in Arab al-Aramshe, a village in the Western Galilee pressed right up against the Lebanese border.

The event happened October 10th (2026), around 20:00 local time, near the Aramsha village in Western Galilee area. Can you make something out of it? It was flying fast when it appeared on camera.
A still from the footage, shared to r/UFOB about an hour after Blumental's post.

They weren’t rocket sirens. They were the alarm for a hostile aircraft infiltration, the warning that something had crossed into Israeli airspace. In a region where Hezbollah used drones against northern communities and soldiers during the last round of fighting, that alarm means something.
Troops went out. Local security teams went out. Roadblocks went up. The search went on all night.
And then a security camera’s footage started making the rounds, showing a small, strange shape crossing the frame. Itay Blumental, a journalist with Israel’s public broadcaster Kan, posted it the next morning with four questions in Hebrew: “A bag? A balloon? A paraglider? A UFO?”
What we know
On the record: documents, statements, dates and places. Sources below.
- The alert. According to the Jerusalem Post, the hostile-aircraft alerts sounded at about 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10. Searches resumed at first light Sunday and were later widened to other spots along the border.
- The early theories. A military source told the Israeli site Walla, as reported by the Post, that there was first concern the object was a drone or unmanned aircraft, but a powered paraglider couldn’t be ruled out. Some Hebrew outlets suggested a bag or a balloon that drifted in from Lebanon, The Times of Israel reported.
- The verdict. On Tuesday, Oct. 13, after what it called an “in-depth investigation,” the IDF said the object was “most likely a balloon-like object or a device that floats using hot air,” which The Times of Israel glossed as something like a sky lantern.
- What it wasn’t. The military said it had determined the object was “not a drone or UAV.”
- What’s still unknown. “At this stage, it is not possible to determine its origin or purpose with certainty,” the IDF said. Its size is unclear. And the object itself has never been found.
- How it was tracked. Israeli Air Force surveillance and detection systems picked it up and “tracked it and directed forces on the ground as they handled the incident,” the IDF said.
What’s claimed
Accounts, testimony and theories, as told by the people who tell them.
- “It may have been a harmless object that drifted into Israeli territory,” the military said. That’s its working conclusion, stated as a likelihood, not a certainty.
- On social media, a UFO. Nerves on the border
The local response was calm but alert. “The regional council’s security teams remain fully prepared and alert, and we are closely monitoring the situation to ensure routine life continues,” Mateh Asher Regional Council head Moshe Davidovich said on Sunday, according to the Post. He said he’d asked the head of the military’s Northern Command for a full debrief.
It wasn’t the first false start in the north. The Post noted that alerts sounded in the Upper Galilee on Sept. 2, prompting interceptor launches, before the IDF concluded they were triggered by a false target. More alerts on Sept. 10 were also declared a false alarm.
In its Oct. 13 statement, the IDF addressed those false detections directly. “The difference between a drone and a bird is very small, and therefore no risks are taken,” the military said.
The IDF says it’s still searching, in the air and on the ground, and reviewing its detection systems. Until someone finds whatever drifted over Arab al-Aramshe that night, “most likely a balloon” is as far as the answer goes.
