'Its Gait Was a Glide': A Colorado Woman Reports a Daylight Bigfoot Near the Top of Slumgullion Pass
A Lake City resident who says she was never a believer reports seeing a 7-to-9-foot figure step out of the trees beside Highway 149 on a July afternoon. She and her husband went back and found one barefoot print. The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization lists it as a Class A report.
Location Highway 149 near Slumgullion Pass, about 10 miles southeast of Lake City, Hinsdale County, Colorado

LAKE CITY, Colo. (July 28, 2026) — Lori Bowling was looking for moose. She was in the passenger seat of the family truck, towing a fifth-wheel trailer down from the top of Slumgullion Pass, scanning the cleared slope below the highway for wildlife.

What stepped out of the trees, she says, was something else.
“Hello, I am Lori Bowling and what I saw was plain as day,” begins her report to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO). “Trust me when I say I am not a bigfoot believer, but after what I saw I sure in the hell am now! It wasn’t a shadow, not a glimpse.”
What we know
On the record: documents, statements, dates and places. Sources below.
- The report. Bowling submitted her account to the BFRO on Wednesday, July 29, the day after the sighting. The organization posted it to its online database on Aug. 7 as Report #81439 and classified it Class A. Her husband, Bill, added his own statement.
- What Class A means. According to the BFRO, Class A reports “involve clear sightings in circumstances where misinterpretation or misidentification of other animals can be ruled out with greater confidence.”
- Time and place. The report gives the time as 3:41 p.m., overcast with storms in the area. The spot is on Highway 149 about a quarter mile from the top of Slumgullion Pass, near the County Road 50 turnoff to Deer Lakes, roughly 10 miles southeast of Lake City. Beetle-killed spruce had been cleared for about 200 feet on either side of the road, the report says.
- The investigation. BFRO founder Matthew Moneymaker is listed as the follow-up investigator. The report gives GPS coordinates for the sighting and includes annotated satellite maps, a photo of the print beside a pocketknife and an embedded YouTube video titled “BF sighting” from an account named William Bowling.
- One witness. Only Lori saw the figure, and there is no photo or video of it.
What’s claimed
Accounts, testimony and theories, as told by the people who tell them.
The figure. “I was looking out the window looking for deer, moose etc. when out stepped from the edge of the woods a BIGFOOT,” Lori wrote. She says it turned to its right and walked uphill along the tree line, about 200 feet below the road. “Its gait was a glide. The color was a dark blackish brown. The head was kind of molded into the shoulders. The arms were long and very hairy.” She estimated it at 7 to 9 feet tall, judging by the small spruce around it, and says she watched it take four or five “big gliding steps” before a curve in the road cut off her view.
Speechless. “I have never been stumped for words, but this was a numbing experience,” she wrote. “I want to tell everyone, but I think they will think I am nuts. I saw what I saw and now that’s all I think about. Kind of spooky and exciting all at once.”
The husband’s view. Bill Bowling writes that the couple are in their early sixties, have been married nearly 39 years and have lived in Lake City for about 12. His family has been coming to the area since the early 1950s, he says, and none of them had ever seen a bigfoot or any sign of one. “We have never even thought about bigfoot type creatures really existing and were skeptical about sightings,” he wrote.
He didn’t see the figure. He says Lori turned to him and tried to speak, but nothing came out. Then she said, “I just saw bigfoot, stop the truck.” He turned around at County Road 50 and drove back, and they scanned the slope with binoculars but saw nothing. “I have no doubt that Lori saw what she saw,” he wrote. “I have never seen her react like she did. Amazed, speechless, excited and yet in her eyes she seemed a bit frightened.”
The print. The couple took the trailer home, about 10 miles, and came back to search. Bill says they found deer and elk sign but no human tracks in an area with no trails, and one barefoot print, which he photographed next to his 4¼-inch knife. A couple of red stems, possibly raspberry, were pressed into it, he says. Plants usually rise back out of a track over time, especially after a good rain, he wrote, so the stems made him believe the print was “somewhat recent.” He also offered a caveat: “the print seemed small for the critter she described as about 7 or 9 feet tall.”
A second print. The next day they returned and found “one possible footprint not much larger than the print from the day before,” Bill wrote. “Are they really footprints? They seem to be.” A storm with lightning drove them off before they could finish searching. The couple’s GPS readings put the first print at 11,467 feet and the second at 11,282 feet.
Slumgullion Pass
Bill says that when he later looked up other people’s sightings, they were “just a perfect match” for what Lori described. “I am as convinced as she is of what she saw,” he wrote.
They plan to go back, he says, though he expects the weather to destroy whatever sign is left on that slope.
