They Whistled Back at a Knock in the Kentucky Woods. Then, a Witness Says, Their Spotlight Found Something 7 to 8 Feet Tall
A Larue County man says a long whistle drew answering wood knocks near a gravel lookout, and minutes later his light picked out a jet-black, bulky figure with 'yellowish green eye shine.' A BFRO investigator who interviewed him on video calls him credible.
Location River Road off Howardstown Road (KY 84), near Rolling Fork WMA, Larue County, Kentucky

HODGENVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 23, 2026) — It started with a sound in the dark, a single distant knock. Clayton Sims and two friends had pulled over at a lookout on a gravel back road near his home in Larue County, Kentucky, about 50 miles south of Louisville.

Clayton described a nighttime Bigfoot encounter in rural Larue County, Kentucky, near Howardstown Road (Kentucky Route 84). While riding back roads with a few friends, at approximately 9:00-10:00PM under a clear sky and full moon, he illuminated a figure standing about 50-60 yards away inside the tree line with a bright hunting light. Close to where I live. I absolutely believe him.
-
I'm confused were they in one truck or more than one truck because he keeps saying trucks plural but when asked he said they were in one truck. Just wondering.
-
I could not understand the town where he saw it. Keep those Kentucky sightings coming. Clayton had some good details not often asked.

“We stood for about 20 seconds in dead silence,” Sims wrote afterward. “One of my friends said ‘Whistle or howl. It could be a Bigfoot.’” So Sims let out a long whistle.
Something, he says, answered.
What we know
On the record: documents, statements, dates and places. Sources below.
- The report. Sims submitted his account to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The BFRO posted it to its online database on Sept. 19 as Report #82512 and classified it Class B.
- What Class B means. The BFRO uses Class B for incidents where a possible sasquatch “was observed at a great distance or in poor lighting conditions” or otherwise without a clear view. The group says Class B reports are “not considered less credible or less important” than Class A, and that its classification rates the potential for misinterpretation, not the witness’s credibility.
- The place. According to the report, the encounter happened on River Road, a small public gravel road off Howardstown Road (Kentucky Route 84), not far from the Rolling Fork Wildlife Management Area. The nearest town is Hodgenville.
- The investigator. BFRO investigator Charlie Raymond interviewed Sims over Zoom, and the report links to a recording of that interview. The BFRO’s biography describes Raymond as the founder of the Kentucky Bigfoot Research Organization, who has researched Bigfoot in Kentucky for more than 30 years and spoken with more than 300 credible witnesses in the state.
- No pictures. There is no photo or video of the figure.
- Coverage. Coast to Coast AM reported the sighting on Sept. 21.

The answer. After Sims whistled, he says, the group heard what sounded like sticks or saplings breaking, so they jumped back into their vehicles. According to Raymond’s summary, the group heard two apparent wood knocks in all, and the second came noticeably closer after Sims whistled back at the first.
The spotlight. The friends drove farther down the road to turn around, Sims wrote, then stopped at the lookout again on the way back to listen. “We wasn’t going to get out this time.” He shined a spotlight into the woods. “I seen around 40 yards away from the truck a black hairy figure that was so dark I couldn’t see it until it moved,” he wrote. “It was around 7 to 8 feet tall. Its back was turned to me but it slightly turned to us as if it was checking to see if we was still there. The outline of the face was ape like with the cone kinda shaped head and a yellowish green eye shine.”
“At that moment I told my friend to get out of there,” Sims wrote. “He floors it.”
The fuller description. In the Zoom interview, as Raymond summarized it, Sims described a figure standing inside the tree line about 50 to 60 yards away, lit by a bright hunting light. It was 7 to 8 feet tall with an extremely bulky build, shoulders 3 to 3.5 feet wide, a thick chest and a very short, thick neck. Its hair was jet black, long and somewhat flowing, and wiry around the shoulders. It seemed to be hunkered down with its arms tucked close to its body, keeping its back to them “as though attempting to remain hidden,” Raymond wrote. When the light hit it, it briefly turned its shoulders and upper body toward the truck, showing “bright greenish-yellow eyeshine,” a somewhat conical, elongated head and a protruding, “gorilla-like” face. The face was longer than a human’s but without a true muzzle, and dark brown against the black body hair. Sims saw mostly the upper body, and the whole sighting lasted about five seconds before fear sent them driving away, according to Raymond.
The details differ slightly. Sims’s written report puts the figure at about 40 yards and the time at around 10 p.m. Raymond’s summary of the interview gives 50 to 60 yards and 9 to 10 p.m.
The neighborhood stories. The group had been to the lookout “plenty of times with no problems,” Sims wrote. He added that they have heard stories of coon hunters whose hounds disappeared during the night, and who found the dogs’ tracking collars “hanging in trees where there are no people anywhere around.” Those stories are secondhand.
The investigator’s assessment
“I found the witness credible,” Raymond wrote. He says Sims’s story stayed consistent across his online submission, text messages, his first phone call and the video interview. To Raymond, the creature’s description and behavior, returning tree knocks and trying to hide from the light, are typical. “Agreeing to a video interview, he has more to risk (ridicule from his buddies), than the reward (attention),” he wrote. Raymond adds that he has documented many sightings in the surrounding counties.
Sims’s own account is shorter. He and his friends answered a knock in the woods, he says, and when they came back with a light, something was standing in the trees, looking back at them.
